The short-beaked echidna has no teeth. It navigates the world through pure sensitivity, using a beak packed with electroreceptors that detect the faint electrical fields produced by living things. A single echidna turns over several tons of soil per year while foraging, aerating the earth and cycling nutrients that other species depend on. When you withdraw from a system, whether a workplace, a relationship, or a community, the texture of that environment changes in ways people struggle to name. They register the absence before they understand it. What you contribute is structural, woven into how things function rather than visible on the surface. When threatened, the echidna does not flee or fight. It tucks every vulnerable surface inward and becomes a ball of spines. Nothing gets in. Nothing gets out. You do this too, and the defense works perfectly, which is the problem. The spines are real and they are effective and the world does learn to stop pressing. But so do the people who were reaching toward you rather than threatening you. The cost is not dramatic. It is quiet and cumulative. Years can pass inside a perfectly defended position.
