The pygmy tarsier has eyes so large relative to its skull that they cannot move within their sockets. To look anywhere, it must rotate its entire head, nearly 180 degrees in either direction. Tarsius pumilus hunts in total darkness at elevations above 1,800 meters, where most predators cannot function. It does not rely on scent trails or group coordination. You gather information through channels others overlook, sit with it longer than feels comfortable to the people watching you, and then move with a decisiveness that surprises them. In the cloud forest ecosystem, the pygmy tarsier regulates insect populations at elevation, filling a predator niche that nothing else occupies. When it disappears, that niche stays empty. Tarsius pumilus communicates through ultrasonic calls that fall entirely outside the hearing range of most animals sharing its habitat. The pygmy tarsier was believed to be extinct for over 80 years until a living individual was accidentally caught in a rat trap by researchers in the Sulawesi highlands of Indonesia in 2008, making it one of the most dramatic rediscoveries of a mammal in modern science.
