Lethasterias nanimensis has no centralized brain. Its nervous system is distributed across its entire body, each arm capable of independent sensing and response, with no single point of command issuing orders. You think this way too. Your understanding of a problem does not arrive from one seat of authority inside you. It spreads, gathers, resolves from multiple directions at once, and by the time you reach a conclusion, the whole of you has already been working on it.
This sea star hunts by pressing its body against prey and everting its stomach outward, sending digestive enzymes directly into the soft tissue of whatever it has pinned beneath it. There is no swallowing first, no waiting for the right moment. The processing happens at the point of contact. You work the same way. You do not collect information and analyze it later in some clean, separate phase. You think by engaging. You understand by touching the problem directly. When you are pulled back from something, when you are kept at a managed distance from what actually matters, your thinking goes flat. You need to be in contact with the real thing to produce anything true.
Predators like this sea star regulate the populations of mussels, barnacles, and urchins across intertidal zones. Remove them and the ecosystem simplifies, the same few species crowding out everything else. You perform a similar function in the systems you inhabit. Your presence keeps things from calcifying around the loudest or most persistent force in the room. When you disengage, the range of what gets considered narrows. The people around you do not always name what they are missing, but the thinking gets thinner. You are a regulating force.
